HEALTH ESTIMATES
MINISTER STANDS BY THEM
WELLINGTON, November 10. A declaration that the estimates of the Health Department would not be altered as a result of any recommendations of the National Expenditure Commission was made in the House to-day by the Hon. J. A. Young.
“These estimates now before the House,” said the Minister, “are the estimates of the department, and I and the Government stand by them. They will remain as they are' unless they are' altered by the House, 'and I don’t su noose members want to see them reduced.” Labour members: How do subsidies compare With' last year’s?
The Minister: They .will pan out at a little loses. We are insisting on economies in many of the hospitals, economies which can he carried out quite reasonably without destroying the efficiency of their services. It is a remarkable fact, and not peculiar to New Zealand, that although the world is passing through a very distressing period, there is-less disease now than there wag formerly. Mr Fraser: To what do you attribute that? Not poverty, I suppose. The Minister: I cannot.say what is the reason. It is a fact, at any rate. There is evidence to support the statement from all parts of the world.
