WASHINGTON, November 11
The more the United States election ‘returns are studied the more apparent it becomes that few Presidents. have entered the White House through so wide a door of opportunity as that which awaits President Roosevelt. The situation in Congress after March 4 will be the most advantageous any President has found in recent years. The House of Representatives will.be three to one Democratic and in the Senate scarcely 20 out of the 96 members will remain who can be counted on to gd doivn the line for the Republican organisation. At one particular point the Democratic strength in the Congress will offer tremendous leverage to the Democratic administration. With so many members elected on the pledge to reduce Government spending Mr Roosevelt will be in a position to slash drastically ‘at the Federal Budget .with every expectation of Congressional and popular support. A serious economic situation will undoubtedly face the new administration, but even that is not without its favourable side.
The generally accepted belief is that Mr Roosevelt will catch the economic cycle on the up-grade and profit politically by whatever improvement follows. si
