SHORT LIBERTY
TWO MENTAL PATIENTS ESCAPE.
MOTORIST’S UNCOMFORTABLE ripe. ,
CHRISTCHURCH/ November 14.
A motorist named Charles Thompson, of Southbridge, had an uncomfortable drive yesterday. Returning from Dunedin he gave two men a lift at Kartigi. They were escapees from the Seacliffe ■mental hospital, but Thompson did pot become aware of this till near Timaru, where the men were taken into custody.
On the journey the party was stopped twice and questioned by constables who were on the lookout. Approaching Timaru the men saw the motorist was now suspicious, and one of them produced a pistol and threatened to shoot him unless he drove north as quickly as possible. His warnings were emphasised with occasional prods in the back. Thompson however, stopped the car alongside Constable Swan, who was waiting on the Saltwater Creek bridge, and told the constable that his passengers were the escaped men. The car was later examined and underneath the seat was found a harmless toy pistol. .
