DEMONSTRATION
WEST COAST FIRE BRIGADES-
ON CASS SQUARE
The annual demonstration of the West Coast Fife Brigades was held on Cass Square on Saturday under very ! favourable conditions. The ground was in. good order, and conditions were favourable for" fast times. The day broke gloriously fine but in the, afternoon clouded over and rain threatened but it cleared, after a few minutes of a. light, misty, rain. There was a fair attendance present and.the proceedings proyed : very interesting, . some ipst 'times being made, and three records for New Zealand went by the board, proving the excellence of the display made. The arrangements, made., w.ere very complete, the officials being well in evidence and except for a stoppage for a few minutes caused -by ;a failure of. the hydrant to cut off the watifr when required, the whole proceedings passed off. smoothly and there was an ahsenoe of disputes, that made the officials’ work easy. Jn connection noth the three N.Z. U.F.BIA. records broken on Saturday, it must be noted that at the last demonstration of the United Fire Brigades Association held at Hokitika,, the rules for the various events were •altered and revised, and a new standard was set at that meeting.

SMOKE CONCERT.
TENDERED VISITORS.
FROM WEST COAST BRIGADES
At tl)e Solditu-s’ £ Hall on Saturday evening a smoke concert was tendered to the officials of the West Coast Fire Brigades Association and the competing members of Brigades at the demostration. The social ball was well filled, and the laden tables made a brave show, the ladies’ committee having provided a very plentiful supply of eatables and other requirements were in full supply. The Mayor (Mr G. A. Perry) presided, the President of the Association, Copt. Callaghan (Westport) being on hi H right hand and there was also a representative attendance of citizens also present. During the evening, songs were rendered hv Messrs D. Maloney (Westport) and A. E. Perry, and a recitation by Mr H. M. Coulson,-. The Happiness' Boys presented a pleasing
musical programme, Mr Ces. Williams supplying the accompaniments, and leading the community singing.

President Callaghan replied to the toast. He, expressed his pleasure at having been elected .President of the Association, the youngest member so far honoured. He spoke highly of the fine work put up by the competing teams that day.
