FIRE BRIGADES

ANNUAL CONFERENCE. west coast Association. The annual meeting of the West Coast Fire Brigades Association was held at Mclntosh’s Club rooms, Hokitika last night. There were present:— Captain Mclnaney (Kumara) president, in the v chair, and the following delegates Capt. Burt (Denniston), Dept. Supt. Daly (Westport), C'apt. Gilmour (Cobden), Secretary Peebles (Ross), Fireman J. Ross (Hokitika), Fireman C. Haines (Kumara), Fireman Mcllwee (Reefton), Secretary Walton (Greymouth), Secretary Mulloy (Jtira), Past Presidents J. J. Williams (Hokitika), A. White (Greymouth), McKendry (Westport). Capt. McEnaney (President) welcomed delegates to the meeting, expressing the hope that their visit to Hokitika would prove a pleasant and enjoyable one. v • The minutes of tho previous annual meeting were read and confirmed.

Annual Report. In presenting the 14th annual report and balance sheet, the President thanked the Welstport Fire Brigade for the very fine arrangements made for the last demonstration and although the weather could not have been worse, every fireman present, appreciated their hospitality. The Googan Shield which was competed for the first time, was won by Hokitiks, whom we heartily congratulate. Since the last meeting a prominent member of the Association had passed away, namely, Fireman Powley. To the relatives and the Reef ton Brigs de sincere sympathy was conveyed.—xvecsived and adopted. The balance sheet showed the cast in hand at the beginning of the year was £2B/3/6, receipts totalling £4/4/6, and credit balance in hand £27/10/2. —Received.

Capt. Coxwoll thanking members for the motion of condolence in regard to the death of Lieut. Powley. Members of the Reefton Brigade lirtd decided to present a memorial cup to be known as the Cup for competition by members ol the Association. He had pleasure in presenting the Cup and trustej that the competition for the Cup would prove of groat, value to members.

The President accepted the gift of the Powley Cub with pleasure, and thanked the Reefton Brigade for their valuable gift. Fireman McElwee (Reo'ton) stated the Brigadq jn presenting the Powley Cup, asked that the rules governing the competition be not altered without the permission of the Reefton Brigade and in the event rf the Association becoming defunct, the Cup revert to the donor. This proviso was accepted by the meeting and agreed to Capt. Gilmouir (Cobden) moved on behalf of his Brigade that in view of each event being now endowed with a cup or trophy to he competed for, that the amount of added prize money he curtailed. No seconder.

Foreman Williams moved that the President of the Association make the

presentation of all prizes and trophies. Seconded by Capt. Burt and carried. 011 the motion of Foreman Williams, seconded by Capt. Burt, it was resolved (hat Secretary Walton be elected an honorary life member of the Association and be presented with a past president’s badge, in appreciation of past services. Secretary Walton expressed his keen appreciation of the honor conferred and heartily thanked members.

Inwari .Correspondence, From Blenheim Brigade inquiring particulars in regard to the rules of the Association. —Received. A further letter stated a desire to join up with the West Coast Association. —Received, It was resolved that Blenheim be notified that they could not be accepted as a member of the Association as ttiey were outside the district. From Reefton Brigade notifying that the Powley Cup presented was to be used for the three men competiton.—Received. From Otira Brigade, nominating J. Weir as Vice President.—Received; the secretary stated that the nomination had come in late. It was resolved to supply all Brigades with a copy of the Balance sheet annually.

The Demonstration. Arrangements in connection with the Demonstration next day were completed, the various officials being appointed. Next Demonstration. Greymouth Brigade extended an invitation for next year. Kumara Brigade also extended an invitation. On a ballot being taken the next demonstration was fixed for Greymouth, for the last week in October or first week in November.

Election of Officers. The following officers were declared elected unopposed:—President, Foreman Callaghan (Westport); Vice-Pres-idents—Nelson (Grey), Capt. Burt (Denniston), Dept. Supt. Daly (Westport) ; Secretary and Treasurer—Secretary Walton (Greymouth); Trustee —Foreman White (Greymouth). Foreman Callaghan (Westport) thanked members for his election as President and the other officers folded in similar terms. ■Votes of thanks for services rendered were passed to several officials. The usual bonus was passed to the secretary. Before vacating the chair, President McEnaney returned thanks for support accorded and the new President took the chair.
