HOKITIKA BOROUGH COUNCIL. 'LAST EVENING’® MEETING. The Hokitika Borough Council met last evening when there were present the Mayor (Mr G, A.. Perry), and Cre. J. King, T. W, Buff, G. Hein*, E. Teichelmann, A. C. Armstrong, Is. W. Heenan and D. P. Stuart. An apology was received from Or, A, R, Eloock. Inward correspondence was dealt with as follows: . Mr» H. Preston, making application for permission to erect suspension verandah at tea-rooms,. Revell Street, and to allow scaffolding on part of footpath during the timer that building is under repairs.—Approved. Mr R. Morgan, and other, residents, asked that footpath between Mrs Findlay’s residence in Revell St. to Spencer iSt. be formed.—Decided matter be given attention. Miss F. Allen asked that gravel be placed in front of lier shop in Hampden, Street.—Received. • N.Z. Refrigerating Co. advised that 33 sheep, 8 lambs, and 1 pig were delivered! into Hokitika during September. The Prime Minister, acknowledged receipt of Council’s representations in respect of the proposed transfer of the Stamps and Deeds Office from Hokitika and intimated that the representations would receive full consideration. —Received. The Vacuum Oil Co., Wellington, 'advised! that arrangements had been made for the removal of the kerbside petrol pump recently operated by Messrn Keenan and Nancekivell.—Received
The Canterbury Progress League, forwarded a copy of resolution carried at conference of Canterbury local (bodies, in respect to motor taxation. —Received. Mr W. •J. Barron asked; who was responsible for the placing of the wooden cart stop on Sewell Street in front of W. Jeffries and Co’s property.—lt was stated that the inquiry rose out of an accident whereby a person had tripped over the stop. The matter was referred to the Borough solicitor to provide a reply. The Hokitika branch of the Returned Soldier’s Association, intimated that the Association was desirous of obtaining a suitable piece of land to be worked by ex-iservicemen in producing (vegetables. It was stated that the Council actually bad no suitable land, but a few other localities were suggested, in particular, Rutland's Island. It was decided! that an area at the upper end of Weld Street be recommended between Jollie and Livingstone Streets. The financial statement showed that receipts for the period amounted to H 8463 17s lid and expenditure to £1449 18s Sd. There was a credit of £42 4s 4d in the District Fun<T Account. Accounts amounting to £671 Os 4d were passed for payment.
Stock was slaughtered at the municipal abattoirs during October as follows:—lSheep 331, heifers 40, lambs 40, bullocks 34, cows 9, pigs 4. Fees amounted to £59 14s 6dl as against £52 14s for the corresponding period last year.
The resignation of Mr Wieblitz from the Council’s employ was received. The Overseer was instructed to commence with the annual work of “spring oleaning” the borough. The foreman (Mr F. W. Chesterman) submitted his report ns follows: Eighty yards of screened gravel was used on the ' Highways during the month, and a quantity used in other parts of th© town, the screenings being used sis a foundation in forming a road way to Mr Christensen’s in Park St., and the continuation of Park St. from Sale St. to Rolleston St,, this will afterwards receive a coating of graver to form the road, about three chains was done in Park St., and 1 a chain -at Christensen’s. A scarcity of gravel on the sea beach during the month only enabled about fifty yards to be put on th© dump road the worst part of it being repaired, as soon as gravel can be got handy this will be completed. Two earthenware pipes in Hampden St. drain, between Hall and Brittain St. collapsed, these were revmoved and sound ones put in. Crossings were put in at Christensen’s in Park St. and at the junction of Park and Rlolleeton Sts., one foot concrete pipes being used. During the month Mr Weiblitz continued with the pipe making, the number made is now three hundred and twenty.* On the pipe line (at Tucker Flat ten pipes were put in on the 6th. and six on the 14th., the pipes used wen© the ones brought from the line near the lake. Water connections were put in at the Croquet Club pavilion in Stafford St., one at Mr Milligan’s in Hampden St., and on© at Mr Christensen’s in Park St. and the water connection repaired at Blank’s in Rolleston St. A new pipe was put in the water main in Gibson’s Quay near the Harbour shed. The east end of the botanical reserve was fenced off to run the borough horse in, which is still unfit to work, a number of leaks and repairs were done to the water mains about town. The average depth of water 'in the reservoir for the month was sft. llins.
UNEMPLOYED. Relief workers were occupied on the following places. At the aerodrome a number are still engaged in levelling the ground, four are cutting down Jollie St. hill, and a number on the botanical reserve, these have finished grubbing the gorse and rushes and have now started to dig up the ground, three or four have been at the cemetery, the roadway being widened, and the fence and gate removed further hack, this Ims been finished, and! now requires a coat of paint, a little taken off the corners i»fc the entrance still requires to }>e done. Four were engaged stripping the clay from the surface of the pit, and three occupied screening gravel, which was used this month on the highways and streets. (Some 'are on the * reserves about town, Casa Square and Macandrew Square and three cutting growth on the road sides while two were with Mr Wieblitz pipe making
