MAOBI WORKERS DENIED
RELIEF
WAIROA, November 9
At a meeting of the local unemployment committee this afternoon, the members were informed that the Maoris who are registered as unemployed are to he refused work • after the current week.
This statement caused, condemnatory remarks by the members present. It resulted in the following resolution, proposed by the Chairman, Archdeacon Butterfield," and the R.S.A. representative, Major Scott, being carried unanimously: “Having learned that the Unemployment Board intend to cut the Maoris off the list of the registered unemployed, we consider that we have no justification for remaining members of the local unemployment , commit"tee, particularly in view of the previous notification received . from the Unemployment Board that the Maoris were to be treated on the same basis as the Europeans.” The members of the committee present then tendered their resignation as a body, immediately leaving the meeting room. / •. ■' -
