VILA, November 9. The Melanesian Mission steamer Southern Cross has been lost on 1 the Island of Aneitum, on her maiden voyage from Auckland to to South Seas.

AUCKLAND, -November 10,

The Southern Cross was built at tho Isle of Wight at a cost of about £25,000, acd had a carrying capacity of ©9 tons. She left England on July 29, under' Contain W. J. Ch©llow, who/ on arrival at Auckland, handed over the command to Captain A. Mi Stanton, who was appointed in-. England, and had come out by passenger ship/ Captain Stanton was a comparatively-> young m'an, and was a member of Mawson’s Antarctic- expedition last year He had spent -about four yearsin the Islands on trading vessels. • The Southern Cross which is the sixth Melanesian ship to bear that name carried a crew of twelve Islanders.
