ENGLAND’S MASCOT
CRICKET TEAM’S VICTORY FLAG.
PERTH, Oct. 29
P. F. Warner, co-manager of the English team, frequently tells the story of the famous flag which he regards as England’s cricketing mascot. Under this flag England ha s never lost a test series, although she has been defeated in individual games. It flew first in Australia in 1903-4, when, after Australia had held the Ashes for some years. Warner’s team wrested the honours. At the end of the tour Marylebone Club presented it to Warner, and. since‘then it has heeii' floWii at cricket matches in which Jiiigihnd..has been engaged iil ffiatiy parts of the world, including, Australia, South Africa, West Indies, England and even Holland,
Now in its old age, Warner has brought it to Australia, but he fears that it would never stand an airing on a flagpole. Warner has bequeathed it in his will t 0 the Marylebone Club. He hopes it will bring good fortune to England again this season in the way of victory in the tests, but he touches wood whenever he refers to the fact that England has ,never lost the rubber under it.
