STRICT INQUIRY
LOCAL BODY ADMINISTRATION
WELLINGTON, November 1
V«ry complete data regarding the cost -of local body administration in New Zealand, is being collected by the Government through the medium of officers of the several departments concerned, :and the way is being paved for a thorough investigation of the whole problem.
After the collection of data has been completed it is possible that a preliminary inquiry will be carried out by a committee of members .of Parliament. Whether it will be then necessary to cet up a further tribunal will depend to some extent on the nature of the report of the comm’-ttee. It' has been .stated thkit the Government would set up a. commission to carry out a full inquiry, ibut it is gathered that Cabinet is anxious to ; avoid the -expense of a commission if the same results can be achieved without it.
