BRIBERY CHARGES
IN N.S.W. COMMISSION’S REPORT

The report of the Royal Ccmthissioner Mr Justice Halse Rogers, who inqnued into the greyhpund racing and fruit machines, was tabled in the Assembly by the Premier, My B. S. B. Stevens, tonight. !~ ' The Commissioner found that mondy had passed in relation to both tin hares and fruit machines, but lie was unable to say definitely ]to whom. . , In the granting of tin hare permits, the Commissioner.. said that he had been driven to the conclusion that the wislies of Judge Swiuueil were ed in almost.every case, and that Swindell was in close touch directly, or indirectly, with some section oi Cabinet throughout'.' ';. , With regard to the fruit machines, His Honour said that there was no doubt that Cabinet ’had sanctioned their, installation,, kndwing that they involved breaches of the Jaw.
Hi his introductory remarks, the Commissioner commented on the prevalence of false swearing before the Coinmission of Inquiry, which revealed the opinion widely held, that, to get things dong bribery must be employed. ' TV;. -
There stood two takers of toll, Swindell. who received money or money’s worth, to get legislation passed, or as the price oi' permits to.race, and Sleeman, publicity officer in the Government’s employ, lidding an undefined position of authority in connectioh with the hospitals scheme levying, week by week, a percentage of the takings from owners of the fruit machines. .

The mechanical coursing clubs have appointed h board of seven members to control the r sport on lines similar to the Australian Jockey Club in .racing matters. Members are permanently elected, vacancies being filled by remaining members.- ' ■ Thus the clubs have no control over the Board, which comprises William Brooks, a Legislative Councillor, E. Lloyd -Jones, Robfj"t‘Walder, Joseph M Seeley, : Sydney Longworth, gild Thomas Hogan.
