GOLD DISCOVERY
£IOO FOR A WEEK’S WORK. YOUNG MINERS’ SUCCESS. (Per Press Association — Copyright.' DUNEDIN, October 23. A somewhat sensational gold discovery is reported from Cromwell. The locality of the find is on the north hank of the Knwarau river on the old Ranfurlv claim, or to those familiar with the locality, just a little downstream from “Rowe’s House.” Two young miners have driven 200 feet throuppi sandstone bottom, and when they first struck an alluvial deposit, good prospects 'were found. During the last ’raw”' weeks the prospects have improved bbhslde'rably as the tunnel was extended, and a great lead from the Kawarau through Cromwell Flat seems to have been opened up. Reports of an ounce or more to the dish, and weekly returns for two men of £IOO and more were current, and now can be more than substantiated. The young men do not make any secret of the success of their latfours.
The lead, with a good body of rich wash, has already been over some distance, and the tunnel is still being driven across it. Some 'of the richest patches cap, in roiniftg terms, aptly be termed a “jeweller’s shop.” The richest ground so far worked was during last week. That the week’s work will produce considerably over £IOO worth of gold can be accepted ns a modest estimate. No Working Difficulties,
The gold is ain even with occasional slugs up to 16dwts. The lead is situated well above the river level, and it presents no working difficulties. It is a case of hard work and enterprize rewarded. The young miners were “new chums,” but enterprising, and their success has been gained entirely without Government control or advice. All they received was a weekly allowance of 14s 3d, and for weeks this did not sulrice for explosives Others are now feverishly setting in on adjoining areas which they hold, and other areas have been pegged off. Another party of two in an adjoining tunnel have also tapped the same lead further east, and is washing as high as 3dwt to the dish.
VALUABLE FIND. BEST FOR YEARS. DUNEDIN, October 25. Early, reports of a rich find made by two men who have been prospecting on Cromwell Flat in the vicinity of the old Ranfurly claim, proved to be by no means exaggerated. Further developments have shown thali one of the richest washes in recent years has been diseased by the prospectors. The prospects have mv proved daily until yesterday the re* suits exceed anything known jn alluvial mining for very many years.
