Lord Howard of Effingham, was committed for trial, for manslaughter, following a coroner jury’s verdict that the death of George Hawkes, killed by a car driven by Lord Howard was due to criminal negligence. The tragedy occurred at midnight on Henley road near Maidenhead on October 10 .Howard gave evidence that he hit something in the fog, a terrific impact, breaking the windscreen and lamp. He searched but could not find anything. The body was afterwards found on a footpath. The verdict was greeted with handclapping.
