CALCUTTA, October 19European opinion in Bombay is amazed at the peace terms which the European cotton brokers have submitted in order that the Indian Congress picketing of the cotton market shall stop. Eight European firms have signed an agreement sympathising with the “national aspirations’’ of the Indian dealers, and declaring that they desire the early restoration of political peace in India, which they believed, could only he achieved by the withdrawal of the Ordinances issued by the Government against the Indian Congress, and the calling off of the civil disobedience movement. They also favoured Gandhi’s early release. Even this amazing surrender of rtlio European traders did not lead to any resumption of normal business till four merchants who were arrested last week for assisting the Congress pickets were unconditionally released, on an appeal by the European cotton brokers.
