RAINBOW TROUT
■ HOW THEY "REACHED NEW ZEALAND. An interesting history of how rainbow trout first came into New Zealand was told at the Acclimatisation Societies’ Conference in Wellington by Mr C. A. Whitney, Auckland. Some years ago, said Mr Whitney, a friendly visitor had been afforded seme pheasant shooting in Auckland, and wishing to reciprocate sent from California a consignment, of rainbow trout ova. They were hatched in the botanical gardens in Auckland, and their propagation end handling were continued at the hatchery farm. From those rainbow trout practically th ■ whole l cf New Zealand was stocked. Only in re<e:it years had further rainbow trout been obtained, but the majority of rivers j.n Australia and New Zealand, inclining Lake Taupe, were oi i finally stockul from Auckland. Brown trout had already been acclimatised by the Hawke’s Bay and Tara, naki societies.
