MISSING
WELL-KNOWN RESIDENT. A painful sensation was caused in town to-day when it became known that Mr .John Peake, assist*ant County Clerk was miss'ng, and that it was feared he was drowned. It appears that Mr Peake had been at his home, Brittan Street, all day yesterday, and after tea he went out to the river bank to watch the flood waters, the* rushing down at a great pace... There were quite a large number of people along the river ban|c (l viewing the .Hood waters. Some time after 7 o’cl vk, Mr Peake was seen walking from the railway bridge in the direction of Brittan Street along the river bank, but after that he was not seen again. He was, wearing a heavy overcoat at the time, and it is surmised that lie must have got too close to the bank of the river and have fallen in.
Not returning to his home before midnight, alarm was felt, and inquiries were made a various places in case he had been taken ill, but without avail. To-day a search is being made in various quarters, and along the beaches, there being every probability that he has lost his life by falling into the river.
