RAILWAYS IN CANADA
FREEDOM FROM POUTICS
OTTAWA, September 29.
To ensure complete freedom from political interference and to terminate the era of financial' irresponsibility on the part of tJfe'inanagement- of the Canadian National Railways, tjie Government will . introduce -legislative to give effect to recommendations of the Railways and Transportations Commission under which three trustees will replace the present political Board of 17 directors.
The Commission, with the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Canada (Mr Justice Duff) as chairman, was unanimous in warning the people that the very stability of the nation’s finances, and the credit of the Canadian Pacific Railway, as well, were threatened if whole-headed measures were not taken towards saving the situation. Legislation will be passed compelling the G.P.R.. to co-operate with the trustees of the Canadian National Railways in eliminating wasteful duplication, and in arranging for joint terminals and the joint use of trackage and hotel facilities.
Vancouver, for instance, will probably get a magnificent hotel for the combined railways service.
