A STRIKE

ENGINEERS UNION PROTEST AT CUTS. (Per Press Association — Copyright.) .WELLINGTON, October 6. A decision to striae forthwith is reported to have been made by the workers in the engineering trade at a meeting i to-day at the Trades’ Hall. it is undJei'istood this was unexpected. The action taken arose out of a ■‘stop-work meetipg of the employees ’of the Wellington Patent Blip Coy. It is believed to be the outcome of reuuced wages. This morning, ,a notice was posted by the management of the Patent Slip Coy., intimating that henceforth the fates of wages would be those proposed by the employers, when the engineers’ dispute came before the Conciliation Council. The employees immediately held a stop-work meeting. This, it is reported, was followed later by a general meeting of the unionists 4t the Trades’ Hall. It is understood the decision to strike was carried by a substantial majority, and the members of the Amalgamated Engineer®’ Union, who are affected, will not report to-morrow morning for work. A representative of the employers told thq “Dominion” this evening that in his 'opinion, the men acted in a precipated and ill-advised manner, especially as negotiations in the Conciliation Council between the Union and the employers were still' open. “Many of their members are out of work at the present time, and those wlio have jobs will \bo the greatest losers by the strike,” he said.
