MR FORBES’ REVIEW

OF FINAL REPORT NATIONAL EXPENDITURE (Per Press Association Copyright.) WELLINGTON,, October 6. A Ministerial statement in respect to the report of the Nation#!.!,Expenditure Commission was made itji the House of Representatives by HM. G., Forbes, who said it was to be. expected that the economies reooimmended in the final hfcjpeft?, wbrild 'not be as great in total as tho'Sh 1 cbntained in .ifip; ‘ interim report. Administrative economy had been the keynote in all Departments for a considerable' time, hence it was now surprising that the economies totalling £845,000 recommended by the Commission' in the final report, involved important matters of policy as also did other recommendations, which the Commission had not attempted to translate into definite monetary savings. The Prime Minister added: “In many respects the final report of the Commission points to a goal to be aimed at, but is not immediately possible. There are many services which tile Commission recommends should be eliminated, but these recommendations would require further investigations before they were endorsed b.v the Government. The Government fully realises that the need for economy is not post. We are aiming at reaching a budget equilibrium in 1934, and it is evident that , unless a substantial increase in revenue becomes available, there is no alternative to still greater economies, unpalatable though they may be. The savings which will result from the report as a whole, cannot at the present juncture be forecasted. In dealing with the report, as a whole, an endeayour has been, and will continue to be, to effect such economies as will result in the least hardship to .the general community, but which at the same time, will bring about a general lowering of the cost of Government, in sympathy with the lower- levels at which prices of primary produce may possibly remain for some considerable time. -

The Prime Minister announced the total cost of the National Expenditure Commission was £1,591.
