brook cup. RETAINED BY HOKITIKA. A hockey match took place on Cass Square yesterday afternoon; a. challenge game fo.’ 'Hae Brook Cup, held by Hokitika Ladies Club. The challenger's were the Mawhera Club of Greymouth. The afternoon wa s beautifully fine but the hot sun tried the condition of .the players, and many were glad when time was called. The game resulted in a draw—two goals each and Hokitika therefore retain the trophy. . ) There was. a sensational start as Mawhera attacked at once and only a smart; save by the goalie, M. Daly, saved' a goal. The ball went to midfield and then N. McGrath came with a great solo run that beat the defence badly and in the circle she steadied up on her own to make a fine driv e that badly beat the goal keeper and found the net. The play went up and down the field, two fine attacks by Hokitika being well stopped by th e Grey custodian and half time came without any further score.

In .the second half Hokitika had till© best of the play, and a reward came after ten minutes, J., Hall hitting a nice goal that th e custodian stopped, but it rolled into goal. Play went up and down the field, many mistakes being made at critical times, and five minutes 'from time a Grey rush was successful, Mrs Uun*e finding the net w'th a nic e stroke. Hokitika attacked strongly and a nice shot by J. Hall just missed finding the not and from the 25 bully off Hokitika attacked and in tile circle were awarded a penalty right in front. The teams. c'osed up for th € defence, but the penalty hitter tipped the 'ball over the circle to M. (Simmer a yard away and with a very hard drive she beat the opposition completely and found the net with a bang. There was only tim e for a bully off at the centre and a moment’s play and time was called, w'th the game a draw. Messrs Stapleton and Fleming were referees.
