SCHMELING WINS
IN GOOD . BOUT WITH WALKER. BOTH MEN WELL PUNISHED. (United Press Association —By Electric Telegraph- -Copyright.) NEW YORK:, September 26. In their fight here, to-night, Schmeling defeated Mickey Walker, the former world’s undefeated middleweight champion, in the eighth round, with a technical knock-aut. The bout was hard-fought. iSchmeling outweighed Walker ■by only fourteen pounds to-day, his weight being 188)' to "Walker’s 174.).
Walker’s weight came as a stirprise, being five pounds' more than in any previous fight. At the outlet, Walker with his left, hooked to the body, Schmeling then banging Walker’s body in a clinch. Schmeling .shook ’Walker up with a volley of whistling hooks to 1 the jaw. Sell moling eventually floored Walker with a right to the chin for a count of six, the hell ending the round. •Schmeling sent a right to the chin, which .staggered Walker, who, however, fought back gamely, hut again Max nailed him with three straight rights. Walker become wobbly, he being badly hurt, but ha nevertheless flung himself on the German, belting at 'Schmeling’s body. The latter ripped hack with half a dozen uppercults. Boxing in. olose, Max landed three more blows, Then, in a rally, Waiter pinned the German on the ropes, and he hammered his head and body.
Walker bounced a left hook off Schmeling’s chin! The German then returned a sharp right. They then slugged at close quarters.
Walker dug a left hook into Schmeling’s body, and hie caught a hard right on' the chin. They exchanged hooks. Then they locked heads, and swung their fists to the tody. Walker shook off two smashing rights to the head to hammer Schmeling across the ring. They were in a clinch (at the bell.
The German was wild with a left hook, and Walker nailed him with a right uppercut, and he then nearly floored Schmoling with a left hook to the body; ' The German bent in. pain as’ Walter- ripped him around the ring. He was sending the . German’s -head black with, his left. '-Max smashed Walker to the jaw, and sent another halt'd right to the head at the bell. 'At the opening of rthe sixth round, Schmeling'-was the more aggressive. He landed , a right which opened a gash in- Walker’s- upper lip. There was a- new .-"fire ,in- the German’s attack as he jammed Walker with a left to the head,’ and forced him to cover. They next- traded rights to the head. Walker drilled a right and a left to Schmeling's body as the hell rang. In the seventh, Schmeling jabbed away at Walker’s face, but Walker banged three -lefts to his body. Then he traded rights to the head with the Teuton, and lie drove him across the ring with a body attack. Walker pinned Schmeling to the ropes, and shot his head back with uppercuts, and also traded rights to -.the head with him, at close quarters as the round ■ At the opening of the eighth round, Schmeling jabbed Walker on the no-se, and Cammed a. right to the jaw. Walker came back with a right to the chin, but again the German shot his opponent’s head back with rights which sent Walker reeling. Walker went down for a count of six under a right to the chin. Walker was almost helpless as the German smashed him about the ring. His left eye was closed. Another right floored Walker for a count of nine. Walker rose, but he reeled. Stumbling from one 1 sidte of the ring to the other, he gamely continued fighting, but he was in a terribly weakened condition. However, Schmeling was not able to floor him again. Walker was reeling in his own corner when the gong rang.
After the eighth round Walker’s manager refused to allow him to continue.
