NOTICE TO CORRESPONDENTS
Enquirer.— The steamer, Jane Douglas left Wellington on Jan. 9, 1912 in charge of Captain Vendore, having .45 tons of cargo including some home consign' ments. Ih ’the passage between d’Urville and Stephen Isands. Tire vessel struck a rock and in five minutes sank. The crew were all saved. STRUCK BY WHALE. Enquirer.—The barquentine Handa Isle was the vessel which was struck b.Y the whale in the Tasman Sea, in 1912. The incident was described as follows:—“When the Handa Isle was off the Three Kings group she overtook two large sperm whales travelling in the same direction. Coming op to the cachalots, one swam off to cither side, of the vessel, and the larger of the two, evidently a bull wlnle, missing his mate, reared himself out of the water, and made off at a great pace from the ship. After traveling at right angles to the Handa Isle for a few hundred yards, hf< turned suddenly, and came back, traveling at a tremendous speed. He came direct for the vessel, and struck her about the fore rigging. Tlio mighty impact caused the Handa Isle to heel over, and the crashing of the hull timoers told her crew that serious damage had been received. The bilges were ~oi.nd
