SHANGHAI, September 24

There was a startling development in the Shantung warfare on Saturday morning, when Chinese marines from gunboats belonging to Marshal Chang Hsueh Liang’s forces, landed and assumed control of Chefoo, without encountering any resistance. Chinese circdes believe that the move intended to secure the huge port revenue of Chefoo, and to defeat Luichenien, who has been in supreme control of the Clieloo district for the past five years. Excellent order is being maintained in the city.
