WELLINGTON, September^. , The annual report of Geoffrey Blake; commanding. the N e ' v Zealand Naval-Station in 1951-32, points out that since, on account of the fin n,ciai crieis, no provision ‘for dev-elopm.nt f . in accordance -with .the approved po'-icy t has been made, New Zealand- is not .y.gt in a 'position to undertak,e hpr local naval defence. The. Nayal board had accepted the postponement of the pr-o-giyfeive development which would have taken place under the policy approved at. the Imperial Conferences in 192 7 ; 1926, and 1930, and which would lya'ye * necessitated -an annual -expenditure of -9565,000. The status quo,‘had- merely been 'pia-intained. and th Q . present estimates. for 1932-33 (£400,000 approximately) were, based, on the minimum rum required -for the maintenance of the various services.
