TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO. (From “Guardian” for the week ending September 24, 1907.) Church Affairs.—The Day of Atone-, ment was celebrated at the Jewish Synagogue yesterday, Mr A. Singer conducting the services, this making the forty-third successive year in which he had taken part in the local services. " Military Parade.—-Lieut-Oolonel Joyce, officer, commanding the Nelson district, held a Government inspection parade of the First Westland Rifles last evening. There wag a good muster of the corps under Captain McGregor and Lieuts. Winchester and Parkhill. The following officers were also on parade, Major Macfarlane, Captains* White and Cottrell, SurgeonMajor Teichelmann, Surgeon -Captain Macandrew apd Staff Sergt-Major Miller’’. At, the conclusion of the parade, Colonel Joyce presented P'tes. . Marks, Burke and Leslie ; with their 'twelve years’ service medals. .Whitebaiting.—Whitebait - have- been caught in fairly large' quantities during the past day or two, and the river banks daily present a scene of activity, there being a large (number.f.’of fishermen engaged. Mr Geo Wood has the.,;-local whitebait preserving - factory allvready for the season’s work. Ross.-—Mr J. A. Murdoch, Mayor of Kumara, paid a visit to RosS yesterday. It is understood that his visit is in connection with a new development of an important nature* closely allied with-the future prospects of Ross and district.
Cricket.—The following officers were elected at the annual , meeting of the Ross Cricket Club on Saturday) evening :—President, Mr W. Winchester; vice-presidents, Messrs J. Grimmond, Kerr, J; Ritchie, Rev. Father O’Connor, and Dr T. Fletcher Telford; captain, W. Currie; vice-captain, T. Mine-, han; secretary, W. A. Mansell; committee, Messrs, W. Clarke, S. Evans, F. Healy, McLelland and Rev. E>. PRice. 1
Kokatahi 7 Notes.—The Kokatahi • amateurs are busy preparing a drama wh’ich isi to be played shortly and which promises to be staged in their usual finished style. Mr H. Diedrich’s engine has. reached within, fifty chains l.ofiits destination,' Mp Burrowes’ splendid team of- horses having drawn it . s&j far safely. The dairy factory will open next Monday morning _ with a fair supply of milk judging by the number of calves sounding in the distance. Labour Report.—The Labour Jcarnal for September states that at Hokitika the building and engineering, ail local men being fully, employed; bootmakers still busy; tailors -almost fully occupied ; blacksmiths, —wh oetwrjghts, plumbers, 'tinsmiths ap'd; painters-very busy. On account of the long dry srell some of the sawmills had to close down but all are again in full swing
