The Legislative Council,, at a late sitting, carried the second reading of the Bill for the reform of that Chamber, by 53 votes to 25, Mr Willis urged the withdrawal of the Bill.. If passed, Labour would never get a majority in the Chamber, and a referendum on the proposed, form, without an alternative, would fail.
MINISTER RESIGNS. SYDNEY, September 23. The “Telegraph’s” Canberra correspondent reports that the Minister of Commerce, Mr Hawker, resigned from the Lyons Cabinet early this morning. For some time Mr Hawker has had differences with his colleagues on the exchange question. Hawker later voted against the Government on the amendment to the Financial Emergency Bill.
