MOTHER OF SPEAKER, (Per Press Association —- Copyright.) WELLINGTON, September 22. The death occurred to-day of the mother of . (Sir Charles Statham, Speaker of the House of Representatives, aged eighty-two. Owing ito the death of his mother, the Speaker d>id not take part in the ceremony connected with the opening of Parliament .this afternoon. When the House met at 2.30 p.m., ithe clerk ((Mr: T. D. H. Hail) announced that Mi* Speaker was unavoidably absent, and the Deputy-Speaker. , (Mr iS. G. Smith) took the chair and conducted th e preliminary proceedings. He also preceded members of the House of Representatives into t'lve Legislative Council where Lord Bledi&toe read the Speech from the Throne. It is possible that Sir Charles 'Statham will be absent from the House for some days.
