OTTAWA RESULTS PROFESSOR COPLAND'S VIEWS. (Australian Press Association.) MELBOURNE, September 15. Professor 'Copland expre r sed the opinion that the agreements made at Ottawa win not lead to development of the Empire as an economic unit. He said that only one-third of Australia’s export trade went to Britain, and of that amount, half '-had to be sold at th e world’s parity prices. Onesjxth of th e Australian export trade would benefit from the preferential duties of ten per cent. The benefit to Australia ovould be -approximately one and a half miTion pounds. A deputation of member® of the Canterbury Manufacturers’ Association waited upon Legislative Councillors and members of Parliament to discuss the difficulties which face manufacturers as a result of the Ottawa Conference,
. The president of the -Manufacturers; A'ssociat-'on (Mr E. Archbold) introduced the speakers, for the manufacturers, who pointed out how New Zealand- manufacturer® -have been affected by,: the proposals embodied in the -Ottawa agreements, and asked -members to bear in mind the diffiulties which wore as a result facing the manufacturers, when th 6 question of ratification of these agreement® was dealt with during the coming session.
No motions were passed, but the speakers were giv-en a sympathetic hearing.
The advantage of a -national trade madk for New Zealand-made goods was mentioned by Mr Archbold, 11 . who drew attention to the growing popularity of locally produced articles. These, -h® said, were now being regarded by the public with distinct favour, and it wa® advisable to have a trade mark for local products.
LIBERALS AND OTTAWA. •- LONDON, September 14. The “Daily Telegraph” says; When the National Libera! Federation meets there is a probability a resolution condemning the Ottawa decisions will be -carried by a large majority, but the motion does not include any criticism of Liberals Ministers, who it is believed do .not regard the issue® raised at Ottawa as threatening to the .unity ,of the Government.
