NO LIMITATION ' ' • . ' '■ INVOLVED IN AGREEMENT. (Per Press Association — Copyright ■ - i,,<\ AUCKLAND, The “New Zealand' Herald” saysi that, contrary to the impression created by : cable messages from Ottawa, .the agreement regarding meat imports into Britain does not involve any limitation on the' exports of frozen mutton and lamb from, New Zealand. The official summary of the agreement with Great Britain contains no reference to the limitation of exports; and a statement from Mr Coates after the conference makes! it clear that none has been imposed.
According to the “Herald’s” Ottawa correspondent, 'iftr Coates, in a •statement, said!that the British Government had declared itself convinced of an over-supply in the United Kingdom market due to an increase of imports and expanding home production. As to -frozen mutton and lamb and frozen beef, the United Kingdom had agreed to limit and reduce the volume of imports, from foreign countries. This will affect South America. The Australian Government has alia agreed to limit exports, Such tut agreement is not required fromi Now! Zealand, but the understanding between the United Kingdom and Now Zealand is expressed in a letter from Mr Coates .to Mr Baldwin, In this, Mr Coates undertakes' that the United Kingdom will be given reliable 'estimates of the shipments at the beginning of each export season. He estimated for the season beginning Oct., 1932, an season beginning October, 1932, an export of ‘200,000 tong which is an increase ‘on the previous year. He estimated a further increase of 5 per cent, in each of the following two years.
For the calendar year of 1933, after consultation with Mr David Jones (chairman of the Meat Board), Mr Coates estimated the export would be the same as in the period from July 1, 1931, to June 30, 1932. The United Kingdom Government agrees to reduce import from foreign countries in frozen mutton and lamb and frozen beef. No reduction :is called fqr in the exports from New Zealand. Mr Forbes said regarding the above: “I haven’t had any information regarding a limit being placed on the export of New Zealand mutton and lamb. There was some mention made of it at one time, according to word which I received from Ottawa, but, a 3 far as I know, it did not come to anything.
