LADY HOUSTON

GIFT TO THE EXCHEQUER,

LONDON, September 10.

Lady Houston, although domiciled in Jersey and therefore not liable for British income’ tax, has paid to the Exchequer a sum of £40,000 —the amount for which she would have been liable if resident in the British Isles. '

Accompanying her cheque was the following letter: — Dear Chancellor of the Exchequer,— Your regrettable decision to refuse my gift of £200,000 which I offered towards lessening the, to me, shamecul cut in Great Britain’s forces of defence, has decided me to send the Treasury a smaller sunt, of £40,000, which It hope you are not too jfroud to accept. This, my solicitor informs me, would be the amount due from me as income tax if I were domiciled in England instead of being domiciled in Jersey. Yours faithfully, (signed) LUCY. HOUSTON.
