Thp “Manchester Guardian's” correspondent says—A speech that has been made by the United Stages Ambassador, Mr Edge, is interpreted as being 1 an expression of America’s hd’iiiiity to the German re-armament plan. Mr Edge stated that Senator Read had. informed M. Herriot, President of France, that while America was determined to press for disarmament on the basis of the Hoover plan, America is opposed to German re-arm-ament.

The “Daily Mail’s”- Paris correspondent says :—lt is understood that the French '.Government’s reply to Germany on the armaments question rejects the German proposal for private negotiations, and' emphasises that any German demanc.j for changes in the Treaty of Versailles must be negotiated openly by the main signatories to the treaty.”

The paper “Vossich Zeitdng,”. referring tp arguments being advanced that Germany should ignore France’s

unfavourable answer to. her arms equality demand, and should lace the allies ■ with ' facts, describes the advocates thereof as “naive minds which, despite the invasion of Belgium and the sinking of the Lusitania, have not yet learned what treaty infractions cost.”

It adds: “Such a policy would result in the stillness of the graveyard reigning over our claims to equality m arms.”

THE GERMAN CHANCELLORSHIP. REFUSED BY VON SCHLEICHER. LONDON, September 12. The “Daily Telegraph’s” Berlin correspondent says: “General von Schleicher, (member o f the von Papen .Ministery), has 1 refused an offer of the Chancellorship, whiclr was mffcle to him by the Hitlerites and the Catholic Centre Party, thereby making a dissolution of the new Reichstau. soein to' be inevitable. General von Schleicher, replying to the offer, stated that it would be disloyal to President von Hiridenburg to do anything to endanger the existence of the Cabinet.
