NEW APPOINTMENT.

LIEUT. COLONEL S. G. SANDLE.

WELLINGTON, September 10. " 'The appointment was announced today of n,.out.-Colonel S. G. Sand e, R.N.Z.A., as Sergeant-at-Arms. Hocije of Representatives, vice Major H. H. Browne, LV1.8.E., who resigned some months ago.

Lieut.-Col. Sandle is 48 years of age, gnd a native of /Stafford, arid resides at p.eseit at I'a’inerston Aorth; He hr.s pursued a military career, having, joined the ; R.N.Z.A. os a cadet in 1900. in January, idol, he was promoted to commissioned rank, and wa s attached to the R.N.Z.A. detachment in Wellington until early in 1905, whenriyhek was removed to Lyttelton as temporary. officer commanding the Permanent Force, and i.n 1911 he was given command of th e R.N.Z.A. detachment at Dunedin, being promoted captain. Four years 'later he again received promo--tion as Major, and in September 1916, he returned to Wellington as staff officer to the Officer Commanding the* Coast Defences. After a few months’ service in that position he took temporary charge of the R.N.Z.A. and of the Military Detention Barracks at Wellington. In June, 1918, he left on active service 'with the New Zealand Expeditionary Force, serving as- major, and after b's return to the Dominion he occupied the position of Artillery fttaff Officer at Auckland until March, 1921, whoa hp was placed in command of the R.N.Z.A. Detachment in that area. From June, 1921, till 'Octoheir, 1923, Major Sandle was officer in charge., of the Auckland Harbour Defences, and he was then appointed staff officer,in? charge of the A and Q brandies at Central Command, Palmerston North. This led to further advancement, early in 1924, to the office of 'Assistant Atlintant end Quartermaster-General at Central Command, and he retired about two year’, ago. Lieut.-Co. 1 .. Sandle saw service in the South African campaign in 1902, as w € ll as in the Great War, and holds th e Queen’s medal with two clasps and the British War Medal.
