A four-roomed house at Millerton, occupied by Mr G. Forbes and family was totally destroyed by lire during the week-end. Tno flames had a firm hold when the conflagration was discovered and the structure was razud to the ground.
Constable J. A. Paddy, of Greymouth, has been promoted to the p-si tion of Mounted Constable for the district, replacing Constable E. J. C. Hay, who has recently been promoted to the Greymouth Detective Branch. Constable Paddy commenced his new duties yesterday.
Pile fowl-house of Mr J. R. Caburh in Turamaha Street, Greymouth, was entered on Saturday night, and six fowls were stolen. On]y the heads were left. This is jV >" second time within a week that fowls have been stolen from this vicinity.

Twelve cases of infectious diseases in the Canterbury-West Coast district were imported to the Health Department during the week ended at noon to-day. Last week, there were also twelve cases. No bases of disease were reposted from the West Coast. There were two deaths from tuberculosis in. Canterbury.
A mob of about 100 horses from the Gisborne district passed through the Opotiki district recently on the way to the Waikato. Ini recent months qute a strong demand has set in for suitable draught horses, and very good prices have been realised at recent ■sales. The horses for the Waikato were ip very good order, and many of good quality were to be seen. The demand for horses is said to have risen as a result of the high price of benzine and the desire of farmers to oconomise as far as possible in farm work.

A man digging in a garden in an Auckland suburb last week unearthed over 100 watches and alarm clocks Some of the watches were branded with the name of a city firm, a member of which states that he knows of no burglary or theft within the last 12 months. An amusing incident occurred during the representative Rugoy match between Ashburton and South Canterbury at Ashburton on Saturday, when two footballs were in, play on the field at the same time.
