THE OLYMPIAD
PRESIDENT ARRIVES. (Per Press Association — Copyright.) AUCKLAND, Sep. 12. The President of the Interntiona! Olympic ~ Council, Count, de Baillet Latour, arrived this morning from Los Angeles. He said the smashing of records’ was less important than the international spirit which Olympic games had inculcated. Oiiginally, England was the only country which participated .in the contests for the sake, of sport alone, hut the spirit had spread and was being more strongly inculcated a£ each .successive, contest. He paid a tribute to the wonderful organisation of Los 'Angeles Olympiad. America had a preponderance of victories,' but. other countries were rapidly coming to the front. Italy, for instance,. had captured the high jump title, and the performances of the Japanese swimmers had been a revelation. „ , James Taylor, president of the Australian Federation, and J. S. Eye, manager of the Australian team, who also arrived by the Mariposa, commented on the perfect conditions under which the contests were held.. Eve was of the opinion that the new records would stand for a long time.
