Although the c-o'al miners’ council recommended a genera] strike against the recent basic wage reductions, it is not regarded likely that other key unions will asquiesce on the ground of lack of funds, and the danger of their positions being filled by volunteer labour.
The coal miners at Corriinal are already in d’>e circumstances owing to the slackness of trade, and are approaching the Government for sustenance as they are ineligible for dole relief.
The WoiV liaggi mine in Vi toria is closing bee; use it lias become a non'sition. The Fede-al Government is considering the repeal of the Irdust'ial Peare Act, which governs mining, with the olvect of allowing the Commonwealth Arbitration Court to intervene in the present dispute and to try to bring the parties together.
