'Eight prizes at the R.S.A. euchre in the Soldiers’ Hall to-night.

Ratepayers in the Borough of Hokitika will be allowed a rebate' of five per cent; on rates for the current year if .paid by to-morrow.

Holders of many sporting trophies, the Hokitika District (High School has been at a loss in the past to find means of displaying the collection of cups and shields to the best advantage. A solution has been effected by the presentation of a handsome esse, the gift of Mr W. E. Richards, a member of the rchool committee., and the trophies will now have a prominent resting place in .(•lie. building. Recognition of the gift was mad<, at a meeting of the Committee last evening wb°n a vote of thanks was parsed to 'Mr Richards, the Rector (Mr J. L. Menzies) expressing appreciation on behalf of the school.

Complaints were made to the’Hokitika School Committee last evening that persons had been felling trees and removing - the timber without authority from the school’s reserve in Sale Street; After some discussion it was dtecidied to take action against any person or persons detected in this practice in the future.

After about three months in Hokitika as instructor to the Westland Aero Club, Captain Mathieson severed his immediate connection with that body on Saturday when he departed for the other side. During that period Captain Mathieson maide numerous firiends and) was the guest of officials of the club prior to his departure. T‘o him is due much of the success of the high standard attained bv the four pupil members of the club who recently passed the examination for the “A” license, and their late instructor took the keenest interest and pleasure in their tuition. It is probable that Captain Mathieson will return to Hokitika at a later date.

After a fine but rather chilly weekend the weather here underwent a change on Sunday night, and yester-' day and to-day have been characterised by miserable showery conditipns. Heavy rain fell last night and extensive areas were completely submerged as a result this morning, the water however disappearing quickly in some cases. The rain was responsible' for a fairly heavy run in the Hokitika river Which is at a rather higher level than usual.

Preparations are well in. hand for the ball to be held in Toker’s Hail in aid of Kaihitiu School funds. The ladies’ Committee are paying special atention to the feupper arfaiigemellts and nothing will be left wanting in that direction. The floor-will'be in class order, while the music will be supplied by the Bachelor Orchestra. The programme will include old time and modern dancing, with a lucky spot dance and waltzing competition. Rare visitors to New' Zealand, two penguins were caught by a Hokitika resident,, F. West,; at Barrytown on Sunday and brought into town. Fully grown,, but not of high stature, with bluish coats and white breasts, the birds were “waddling” across the road when caught, and showed a, distinct dislike to, being captured. At present they are in captivity in. Hokitika, being placed in a long grass run. Fairly savage of nature they have scared other birds and animals at the residence where they are held. Their menu provides chiefly for fish and salt water.

Hokitika has again come into line with other towns in catering for the hobbies and amusements of the people, by the inauguration of a model aero club. Formed only a week ago, there are already sixteen members, who are showing-keenness and aptitude in the aft of construction. A competition is at present being conducted, members being required to construct a scale model of the Spartall plane of the Westland Aero Club. A meeting Was held last week when the following officers were elected!— President, Mr A. H. ftance-kiv-,11; vice-presidents, Messrs H, T. Parry, J. Renton, H. Preston, and Father McKay; instructors, Captain Mathieson and Mr B. Flynn j secretary, Mr A. Sutherland. There was a good attendance afc the meeting and prospects for a successful year are highly reassuring.
