A message from Des Moines, in the State of lowa, spates that . the first widespread disorder- in the ‘‘farmers’ holiday movement,”,.; which . has teen in progress, for ,several weeks, developed there to-day as the disorganised members, of the war ; veterans!, bonus army, who were - qyjpted: fvdm . Washton, joined the.,•fa'jjpi;; pickets, who are attempting to . prevent the shipment of foodstuffs into the cities, in an effort to force an increase in foodstuff, prices.
Peace officers who were escorting produce trucks.; had to fight their way through: the picket lines with clubs. The farmers resisted them. A number of injuries resulted. The “farmers’ holiday movement” thus far, as virtually • limited to the State of lowa, but the leaders of it are urging the agricultural organisations throughout the ..nation to take This movement' was started.when the fanners declared that they were .receiving less than production co«s, of their produce. •
The farmers’ ..pickets are using automobiles to block the highways and when! the. .food truoks are halted, they threaten the occupants with violence unless they turn hack. y.'oc '• Officials in several lowa cities are urging the, declaration of martial law, and the :l use. of National Guard troops to insure the. food supply.
