Flight-Lieut. V. Somerset-Thom? s who flew to Hokitika in the record time of 56 minutes on Monday, took 9(J minutes on his return journey. Beautiful weather was experienced, and although there was no wind' at ground level on either Side of the Alps, there was evidently a fair easterly breeze at a high altitude, for the return journey, took so much longer. Flight Lieutenant Somerset-Thomas said that the standard of the work of the candidates examined for air certificates was extraordinary good.

At the last meeting of the Kumara Borough Council, a letter was received from the Secretary of the Westland HospietnJ Board enclosing a letter f om ■Dr Watt, Director-General of Health, on subsidising a doctor for Kumara. stating t,iat in his opinion, the Board would be justified in reducing or even discontinuing the subsidy, having regard to the proximity of Kumara to both Grey and Hokitika. « On the motion of Crs. Murphy and Wise, it was decided that the Town Clerk write to Dr Watt, asking him from whom lie had made inquiries when in Kurnara, regarding the. necessity for subsidising the Kumara Medical Service, and a, copy of the letterto be forwarded to the Westland Hospital Board.
