The Commonwealth Statistician, in his annual report, stated that the birth rate in Australia for 1931 is the lowest ever recorded, being 118, 509, as compared with 128,339 in the previous year,

Out of every thousand chidren born in 1931, forty-two died within thenfirst year, which is the lowest rate recorded. The total deaths in 1931 numbered 55,560, which is the second lowest total on record.
