SCHEME CONDEMNED
BY EMPLOYMENT COMMITTEE.
CHBLSTCHuitCH, August 29,
Believing that the Unemployment Board’s new scheme of subsidising residents for work put in hand on their -properties would result in many men being deprived of work other than at relief rates, the Citizens’ Unemployment Belief Committee decided to-da.y not to approve o. the plan. Local bodies in urbau areas will have this decision communicated to them. * >.
Statements were made ’at a meeting of the committee to-day that local bodies could not carry on the scheme unless I‘ehnbused for; outlay for insurance and transport. The time had arrived it was said by two members, when the Government should put the unemployed on the dole. Residents who were already employing, men at ordinary rates would probably, if the new scheme were adopted., dismiss them, and take on men at relief rates for gardening, Avood-choppiirg, 'section (ifdaring and sub-soil drainage .and trenching, all of which work waVsubject to a subsidy from the •Unemployment Board of half the cost of the labour at 'relief rates.
