HUGE THEFT OF CHURCH FUNDS

WINNIPEG, August 27,

The funds amounting to one million and a quarter dollars of the Church of England Diocese of Rupert Island and St John’s College, have been seriously depleted. This was disclosed on Saturday by the church heads, who have started an examination •of the books, following cn the arrest, two days ago, of John Machray, the bursar of the University of Manitoba and the chancellor of the Rupert Island Diocese.

Only a quarter of a million out o 7 the million and a half dollars of the fund remains intact. This sum is accredited to the Eceeslastienl Province, and is not handled by Maehray,

The remainder of the Church trust funds are divided between tho Bishop’s Fund, and St. John's College Fund and the St. John’s Cemetery Fund. These have been impaired to an alarming extent, Tine Clergymen's Fund has also been seriously depleted.
