EFFECT ON MARKET GARDENERS.

(Per Press Association — Copyright.)

CHRISTCHURCH, Aug. 27

A reply to market gardeners who have protested that their livelihood wil be affected by the scheme for providing unemployed with land to grow vegetables was made by the Gardens Allotment Committee at its meeting yesterday afternoon. Mr J. N. M’Leod stated that market gardeners protested against the scheme on the grounds of the possibility of the unemployed'placing the vegetables on the market in competition with the professional growers. He pointed out that" the committee had no legal power t-o prevent the unemployed from selling the vegetables grown on the land provided for them, “If any man can grow enough vegetable for himself and his family and have a surplus, for sale on the land that we are providing him he will perform a miracle,” said Mr B. J. Goodwin. He added that the plots would be 60 feet square and thiq land was not sufficient to grow a large amount of vegetables for sale. Mr W. W. Scar If said that one of the conditions under which land was provided fcfr the unemployed was that any surplus of vegetables had to be sent to the Central Relief Depot. Mr L. B, Hart said that the committee’ supervlors would see to it that any surplus o-f vegetables had to be sent to the Central Relief Depot p<not sold, and that flowers would not be permitted to be grown on the plots.
