The result of the challenge for the Ranfurley Shield on Saturday at Christchurch, when Canterbury defeated West Coast by five points to three formed the subject cf much pleased comment locally. Following their recent showings against Buller and Auckland, and in view of the substantial defeat of Auckland (with an allegedly much stronger team) by Canterbury, it was 1 thought that an easy victory rested with the home team. The result was the reverse, and judging by reports to hand, the. West Coast team put up a big fight; and nearly had the honour of victory. There was an im-p-res ion in Christchurch that the West Coast team would not be able to make their opponents gallop, a fallacy that has received a sharp shock on previous occasions. The solid showing by the Coast team will give a further impetus to football on this side of the ranges, and will distinctly give heart to the Buller representatives when they go to Christchurch on a similar quest for the Ban fur ly Shield im the course of a fortnight.
