CLOSER UNION PROPOSAL,

Correspondence that has passed between the Colonial 'Officer and the Governors of Kenya, Tanganyika, Nyassaland, Northern Rhodesia and the British l 'President in Zanzibar, concerning the recent report on the proposal for closer union in East Africa has been published. On the main issue the Committee reporting had advised it was not a time for any far-reaching; stop in the direction of political or constitutional union. It ireoommendeol, however, that the Governors’ Coil for ence should be used to ensure a, continuance of effective cooperation dn regard to matters ot common interest in East Africa.

Letters expressing the views of the. Governors are followed by a despatch .from the Colonial Secretary in which iSir P. Cnnliffe Lister, accepts the Committee’s view >in the main issues. The importance of effective co-opera-tion in regard to transport matters and" communications generally, and in matters of research, is emphasised and it is stated that it will be the duty of the Conference of Governors to ensure the maintenance of such cooperation.
