RAIDED CASTLE

The London “Daily Mail's” Roscommon correspondent says: “Donamon Castle and the grounds are to be used as an 1.1t.A. training camp, according to the leader of the raiders, who has refused to make any further statement as to. the purpose of the seizure of the castle. There are no sen-, tries on duty, but the castle approaches are closely watched from upper windows, and strangers are warned off. The raiders arrived in lorries, and cars. Th'ey had apparently travelled a considerable distance. Nobody knows how they are being rationed. The local storekeepers are receiving no orders from thorn for supplies.” The “Daily Mail’s” correspondent continues: “The Adjutant-General of 'the 1.R.A., in a statement, says: “The facts in connection with Donamejn Castle are that a party of volunteeers who are unarmed, have assembled for the purpose of camping in a short period there. Thp castle has not been occupied by force. It has been unoccupied for many years.’ He uddsi (The LR-.A. is not a secret organisation,' ” Tiiis conflicts with press reports that the leader told a reporter to get out or ho would be put out. The owner of the castle is living in Hampshire, England, and ne says that he has no' intention of return'ing. He'.took his furniture away. He says that he is not surprised at the seizure and would not be surprised at anything. His agent was shot dead outside the castle. He had tried to discover the murderer, but the tenants stated that they knew nothing.

(Received this day at 9.30 a.m.) ~ LONDON, August 23. “One thing certain in the welter of uncertainties is the fact that the situation has passed : out of de Valera’s control,” says the “Times” Dublin correspondent, referring to the s'eizure of Donamon, which a number of men, carrying bedding and clothing entered to-day. A group of young men proclaiming themselves to be members of the I.R.A. visited several Dublin cinemas and warned the managers not to show British propaganda news or reels depicting their Majesties, notwithstanding the fact that ’ Dublin audiences still cheer the Prince of Wales. Some have already obeyed the ultimatum rather than risk the wrecking of their cinemas.
