John Bright Austin, aged. 59, > off Tanmamnui, pleaded guilty to oh-, • taining £IBO by false pretences from various persons by falsely representing that he was one, J. Oleins, in a position / to engage bakers and cooks on behalf of an English firm. He was committed for .sentence. He inserted 1 r advertisements in various papers .relative to a two-year contract at 2s per hour, and received 1 188 replies to the advertisement. He .then drafted circular letters. request-', ing that each applicant should ’ enclose a £1 note, and not a postal note' 1 for cable and passport purposes. Accused' was a baker, and a native of England, and arrived here last year. •
