LAND SPEED RECORD
SIR M. CAMPBELL EXPLAINS,
WHY NOT COMING TO DOMINION
(Per Press Association— Copyright.)
AUCKLAND, August 16,
Sir Malcolm Campbell has written to the chairman of the Auckland Automobile Racing Club explaining the circumstances which influenced iliim in deciding not to come' to New Zealand this year, although he would prefer to make his next record attempt in New Zealand, rather Hum anywhere else ’in the world.
■He says that if lie goes to Daytona, he knows exactly what difficulties to expect, but conflicting reports readh him about the Ninety-Mile beach. Secondly, the ’Daytona course is' always kept absolutely clear which, he imagines, is almost impossible to do at Ninety-Mile beach. Thirdly, /he can get to Daytona and back within a month.
He had read in one New Zealand paper of gulleys running down the course.
“I can . only tell you that nothing wofild induce me to take a gulley at a speed of 200 miles an Ihour or more. Uneven surfaces are also very dangerous, and I have, many times hit these at high speed, and my car has jumped over 40 feet. This is all very well at 200 miles ..per hour, but at 250 miles per hour 'it becomes impossible.
