PLAN BOYCOTT RETALIATION AGAINST BRITAIN. (United Press Association—l3y Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) . NEW YORK; August 13. The organisation known as the “Irish 'Rato” 'Convention opened today its Convention, 'at which some seven .hundred delegates ai'e present. They are partisans of Mr de Valera. The Conference laid plans for a boycott of British goods in retaliation for the British tariff wall against • Ireland.’’
Mr Jdhn Hughes, of Boston, Attorney, gave tho keynote .address. He Aaid: ‘‘The ’English, politicians think; that they are going to iweaken the Irish by thejr agricultural duti-s, on exportshup they are deluded,’ because .the Irish people of America, , Canada, Australia and South Africa a\e going to stand behind the Irish in Ireland, and to help them.” ,
The delegates present represent many .parts of the'tlnited States and Canada,
ADMISSION BY DE. VALERA. CAUSES PROFOUND SENSATION. . LONDON, August it. The “Morning Post” Dublin correspondent says ’:“Me de Valera's recent admission in.’ flhe Dail 'Eireaan tkat he had no intention of disarming the I.R.A. in accordance with any' earlier pledge has created a profound sensation, and a -meeting of ex-Minis-ters discussed the situation, and agreed it meant an end of .all constitutional government in the near 'future.*
It previously had become impossible for the ex-Ministers to address a .public meeting owing to threats that the I.R.A. would 'Sweep them from' the streets.V; (Mr Cosgrav-e has idetermined, next week, to address a meeting in his constituency,.at Cork,’ and consequently a number of ex-officers have decided to combine to combat the I.R.A. teijrdiv ism. The enrolment is now begun of the Irish. Free State Army of Comrades’ • _ Association under Colonel o’Higgins, a member of the Dail Opposition, and a ■ brother of an ex-Min-ister,- Kevin_ O'Higgins,' who was shot dead a few years ago. ... vThe new,Association is determined to oppose Mr’ de Valera’s illegal army, And is meeting with a ready response from both young and older men. Its obligations 'include drilling. The Free State, now has three armies, airily described by their colours, green being the ■■official army, red the 1.R.A.,;. and white the new volunteers.
Meanwhile economic war is spreading disaster to Gallagher’s tobacco factory, wifiich has .been- removed to Belfast, rendering hundreds idle, and Lord Furness hag closed a stud farm and sold blood stock valued at £50,000, Mr do Valera is inundated with .'requests for assistance from ; the two million “fighting fund.”
