FALSE PRETENCES

Wages two shillings an hour.” This was tlri wording of an advertisement inserted in a number 'of Dominion 'newspapers, and it lias ]ed to the arrest of a man named John Bright Austin, at M'a.nunui, near Taumavunui, on a. charge of attempting to obtain money by fals-ei pretences. He appeared in court in Taumaruoui to-day and was remanded to Wanganui; One hundred and eighty-three - peiv sons replied to the advertisement, which appeared about March 8 or. .9. About the ‘beginning of August 171 ofthose who replied received a circular., which among other thii/gs asked the recipient in his reply to 'enclose a pound note for cable and par sport purposes. . . • ' ’
