In iiis address at the annual meeting of the Wellington branch of the Royal New Zealand Society for the Health of Women and Children the Minister of Health, Hon. j, A. pointed out that during the past 25 years deaths in the first year of life ad been reduced from 88 per 1000 to 3’.15.
An increase in the number cf packets containing matches passing through the post has recently been noticed. Vuckland Post Office officials connect the practice with the increase in the 'umber- of unemployment relief camps. Presumably smokers among the men re in the habit of asking relatives and friends in the city to keep them upplied with matches. Owing to the danger to the mails, however, the '•ending of matches of any kind by post is prohibited. ■ ' • w •
A claim that he was- the originator .f the present system of highways •finance was made by the Acting-Min-istei* of Public Works, Hon. C. E. Macmillan, in replying to a deputation •,t Wellington. He said that from his first speech in Parliament in 1923 he had advocated the' introduction of the petrol tax being applied to highways 1 uropses. He thought the motorists had received value for the money spent out of the petrol fund for road construction and other purposes.
' “We tried to give it away, but no one seemed to want it,” remarked Mr J. Rowe, president of the Auckland Trotting Club, at the annual meeting last week, when, asked about the position of the club’s property' at Otahuhu. He said that is had cost £36,000. The original price was £24,000 and the sum of £12,000 had been spent on it. Today it was offered at £IB,OOO. and no one seemed ivilling to take it. “We ivould only be too delighted to get l id of it, I can assure you,” he added.
